How is Sonderbriefing funded?
Sonderbriefing generates revenue through display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, and content licensing. None of these funding sources influence our editorial decisions, which remain independent and guided solely by journalistic standards. Every commercial arrangement is clearly labelled so you can distinguish it from independent reporting. For full details of our ownership and funding structure, see our ownership and funding page.
We believe transparency about our revenue model is essential to maintaining your trust. Display advertising appears on article pages and in our newsletter. Sponsored content is always marked with a prominent disclosure, and affiliate links are identified as such. Commercial partners have no input into what we cover or how we cover it. Our editorial team, led by Chefredaktör Tim Zimmermann, has the final say on all published material.
What are affiliate links and how do they work?
Affiliate links are special URLs that allow Sonderbriefing to earn a small commission if you purchase a product or service after clicking through. You pay the same price as you would by visiting the merchant directly; the commission comes from the provider, not from you. We disclose affiliate links clearly, usually with a note such as “this link is an affiliate link” near the relevant article text.
We only include affiliate links when the product or service is genuinely relevant to the story and adds value for our readers. Our journalists and editors never choose a product because of an affiliate relationship. The decision to include an affiliate link is made after the editorial content has been finalised, ensuring independence. If you have any questions about a specific link, please contact our fact-checking team via factcheck@sonderbriefing.de.
How this works in practice
Imagine we publish an article about the latest electric vehicles available in Sweden. In the text, we mention a specific model and include a link to the manufacturer’s test-drive booking page. That link may be an affiliate link. If you click through and book a test drive, Sonderbriefing might receive a small fee from the manufacturer. Our journalists writing the article had no knowledge of the affiliate arrangement while researching or drafting the piece. The fact-checker and editor who reviewed the story only added the affiliate disclosure after the editorial content was approved. This process guarantees that commercial considerations never affect what we write or recommend.
We apply the same principle across all content types. Whether we are reviewing a book, comparing insurance policies, or covering a cultural event, any affiliate link or sponsored element is handled separately from the editorial decision-making. Our readers can trust that the information they see is based on editorial merit, not financial incentive.
How does advertising affect editorial content?
Advertising partners cannot influence our editorial conclusions. Display advertisements are sold by our commercial team and placed in predetermined positions on our site, but the newsroom decides what stories to cover and how to present them. Sponsored content is clearly labelled with the word “Sponsored” or “Advertisement” and may be produced in collaboration with a partner, but it is always subject to the same editorial standards as our regular journalism. Our full sponsored content policy explains how we ensure that commercial material remains transparent and clearly separated from independent reporting.
If we ever receive a suggestion or request from an advertiser regarding a story, we decline. Our editorial independence is non-negotiable. If you see any content that you believe blurs the line between advertising and journalism, please report it to our complaints team at complaints@sonderbriefing.de.
Who owns Sonderbriefing?
Sonderbriefing is owned and operated by Sonderbriefi Media Ltd., a private company registered in Gibraltar (company number C 92009, Malta Business Registry). Our registered office is at Office 9, Business Centre, Valletta, 0000. The company was founded in 2024 and operates with a clear editorial mission: trustworthy Swedish journalism free from external influence. For a complete breakdown of our ownership structure and any potential conflicts of interest, please visit our ownership and funding page.
Our editorial independence is safeguarded by a formal separation between the commercial and editorial teams. Chefredaktör Tim Zimmermann holds final responsibility for all editorial content and has the authority to reject any commercial proposal that could compromise our journalistic integrity. The same protections apply to our fact-checking and corrections processes, as outlined in our editorial policy.
